Location

Collins Avenue, South Beach

1401 Collins Avenue sits inside the Art Deco Historic District, the largest concentration of 1930s architecture anywhere in the United States.

The district

Inside a protected neighbourhood

The Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and given local historic protection in 1986. Beach Plaza is one of its buildings: three storeys, built in 1936 to a design by L. Murray Dixon, one of the architects who gave Miami Beach its streamline vocabulary.

That protection is why the street still reads as a single period piece — racing stripes, ziggurat rooflines, fluted columns and terrazzo, block after block.

The beach

The sand is the reason the street exists

Collins Avenue runs parallel to the ocean, one block inland, for the length of South Beach. The public beach, the boardwalk and Lummus Park all sit on the ocean side of the block.

Walking times are deliberately not listed here. No measured distance for this address exists in our own records yet, and an invented number is worse than none.
